On my island-hopping trip through the Cyclades, packing light was key. I carried a sturdy daypack and checked a small suitcase on the longer legs. Some ferries offer luggage handling for a fee, and ports have lockers. Hotels or hostels on each stop were happy to hold bags until check-in, making every hop smooth and easy.

In island-hopping by ferry, typical options are: bring a cabin/checked bag on the boat (often with a small fee or weight limit), carry-on on board, or arrange luggage transfer with a courier or the ferry operator to your next hotel. In my Greece trips, shipping larger bags ahead saved dozens of stairs. Some ports offer luggage storage lockers. Pack a daypack for each island.

On island-hopping trips, I keep most of my stuff in a small daypack and ship the bigger bag between ports. In Greece and Croatia, some ferries offer a luggage hold or early check-in where bags are tagged and loaded to the next island; other times I’ve used local lockers or left a larger bag at the first hotel and picked it up later. When possible, ask the ship or tour operator about baggage forwarding.
