After you deplane and clear customs, head to a licensed currency exchange desk or bank counter if you prefer cash. Bring your passport; many desks still require ID for exchanging foreign currencies. Ask for the buy rate and any fees before you hand over cash or card; rates at arrival desks can be higher than city banks, and some vendors push prepaid cards or dynamic currency conversion. A common path is to withdraw AUD from an ATM using your debit card, which gives you the live interbank rate minus your home bank’s fees. If you don’t mind carrying some cash, exchange a small amount at the airport to cover transport, then get more at a city bank or use cards for most purchases. Always tell your bank you’ll travel to avoid surprises.

On my last layover, airport kiosks were handy for quick cash, but the rates weren’t great, better to use an ATM later.

Bring your passport, compare buy rates, and avoid dynamic currency conversion. Use an ATM for the best rate, keep receipts, and don’t cash out large sums at the airport. Plan a small cash amount for transport, then rely on cards for most purchases.
